Lifespan
Definition
Lifespan is the total length of time an organism lives, from birth to death, and can refer to an individual or a species-typical range used in ageing research and demography. [1] [3]
Why It Matters in Ageing Research
Lifespan is one of the most obvious outcomes in ageing research because it measures total survival. But it does not say whether those extra years are healthy or impaired, which is why researchers also use healthspan and functional outcomes. [2] [3]
Common Confusion
- Lifespan is not the same as healthspan.
- Lifespan is not identical to life expectancy, which refers to average expected survival in a population.
- Longer lifespan does not automatically mean better late-life function or quality of life.
