Senescence Surveillance

Definition

Senescence surveillance refers to the immune system's ability to detect, contain, and clear senescent cells. Senescent cells can release signalling molecules through the senescence-associated secretory phenotype, or SASP, which may attract immune cells such as macrophages, natural killer cells, and T cells to remove damaged or potentially harmful cells. [1] [2] [3]

Why It Matters in Ageing Research

Senescence surveillance matters because senescent cells can be beneficial when they support tumour suppression, wound healing, embryonic development, or tissue repair, but harmful when they persist and drive chronic inflammation or tissue dysfunction. Age-related weakening or dysregulation of immune surveillance may allow senescent cells to accumulate, linking cellular senescence with immunosenescence, inflammaging, and age-related disease.
